Eggs, Almost any Style
This is just a simple anecdote about human interchange. I had breakfast in
a Quainte Inne near Boston recently. The waitress was about 50 and objectified the
word "homey" (though not in its current usage in Black english vernacular).
They had a side dish of "2 eggs, any style $2.95" and also "Omelet $5.95."
I was thinking I could earn a good living doing egg arbitrage (well
not necessarily a good living but un oeuf to get by (god forgive me))
by shorting the omelet
and going long the side eggs. So I asked her for a "side order of
two eggs in the form of an omelet."
Waitress: "Oh, you can't have the side eggs as an omelet."
Me: "I see. What styles does `any style' cover?" (It is important to
note that I didn't emphasize the word any .)
Waitress: (without even a soupcon of irony) "Fried, poached, boiled, shirred..."
Me: "But not omelet."
Waitress: "No, not omelet."
