Romantic Retrospective
I saw a 50 year retrospective on romance in movies yesterday.
Well actually it wasn't billed as such. What exactly happened
was that at 11:30 to 1AM I saw a movie called (I think) `Sexual
Response,' in which a radio-therapist (and why do radios need
therapy?) has an affair with a young stranger (turns out to
be her husband's son from his first marriage, so its all copacetic).
Then at 4AM I saw Ruby Keeler in some movie, quite likely `42nd
Street.' Though clearly a vehicle to highlight Ruby's tapping prowess,
there was a romantic subplot in which two characters pitch woo
at her - one a low-life "wolf" (as evidenced by his penchant for
giving her pecks on the cheek (OK, all four cheeks)) and one a
"wholesome guy." (hence WG) There was a tense moment when WG carries
the sleeping Ruby to his bed and she wakes up and looks at him
expectantly. It turns out that he was just doing calisthenics and
he quickly retreats to the couch. It should cause pause for thought
that they probably just barely sneaked this pass the censors whereas
today, Britney Spears noodling around in a G-string made from dead rats (and here
I have in mind either thin dead rats or a thick G-string) would
barely raise a pierced eyebrow.
